Cantata to Hats

by Marie Anne Greene

A hat can range from very simple, small and utilitarian to a large colorful, feather accentuated masterpiece of color shape, form and fun. To modern American woman a hat, or to use the more sophisticated term French descriptor “Chapeau” is much more likely to be the simple knit skull or ski cap that she can just pull on to provide extra warmth for her head and ears or protect her hair from snow or rain. These are obviously practical purposes and she may select the color and style and may even fall into a category which she, or other women may label cute, but none match the female descriptor of “To Die For”.

Such a shame. A hat can be a true Crowning Glory only surpassed by a Magnificent Hairdo, or possibly a diamond studded Tiara or Pearl Adorned Crown. In today’s modern world there are but a few opportunities or events which the wearing of Non-Utilitarian Chapeau is appropriate. Some of these are a Wedding — Mother of the bride (or the Groom), a Christening, the Kentucky Derby, the Annual Steeplechase, or perhaps the Easter Parade or a Spring Garden Party. Perhaps you Dear reader can add a few more, however my point is there are just not enough occasions to indulge in having fun with hats.

Contrary to most other items of a lady’s apparel there are almost no limits to the creativity that can be expressed within the category of Chapeau that this Girl alludes to: The flamboyant one of a kind that gives the wearer a true sense of style, and her personal uniqueness.

The author is extremely fortunate to live in a southern town that still boasts of one of these Meccas of Female, Frivolity, Foolishness and Flamboyance. Visiting this universe of imagination and color by yourself can be wonderful and thrilling, However visiting the same store (if you can find one) with another Girl or Two can be joyful, hilarious and riot of fun and laughter and provide a special collection of selfies and friend pics not be easily rivaled.

Of course, if the proprietor will allow the adventure and thus essential female experience can be spiced up with a smidgen of a Wine or Champagne tasting. If you are fortunate enough to locate a Shoppe and a cooperative owner you and your friends (of any or all stripes) could really have a fabulous and fun time. If this is impossible a substitute could be a “Self-Help Hat Design Party” at regular or special rendezvous of your Girl Gang.

To give you a flavor of the possibilities of this unique female fun experience, Marie Anne offers (for your enjoyment) a small collection of “Easter Bonnets and Chapeaus” for your viewing pleasure and perhaps spark your interest in experimenting a little into another set of portals into the feminine world. ENJOY !
