Putting Things On vs. Wearing Things

There is a difference, a rather significant difference. Prior to my self-acceptance, I put on various articles of woman’s clothing. Some ill fitting lingerie and a too big dress. A two piece (purchased as a pair) skirt and top combo. Bra, panties and pantyhose underneath 15 layers of male clothing so no one would know. I was simply putting things on. That was both because I was principally disgusted with myself as well as the way I acquired clothing back then. That compulsion lead to putting things on, self acceptance lead to wearing things. I could draw a similar distinction to wearing women’s clothing vs. dressing like a woman, maybe I will someday.

I had no idea what size anything I was. Since I am male, I assumed I should be an XL in woman’s clothing (even before my weight loss, that wasn’t the case). I also bought clothing in the quickest possible fashion, grabbing whatever, paying quickly and getting out of Dodge as soon as I could. I simply put things on me.

Now, I wear women’s clothing because in many ways, I am a woman. Things fit properly. They are part of a well thought through outfit. I am proudly female!

Now being who and what I am now for quite some time, I still have times when I put things on and when I do, they are never comfortable or simply don’t feel right. Frankly, I feel stupid afterward. I’ll use the bra as an example. When I wear a bra and by that I mean it is performing it’s intended function of supporting breasts (be they my own or my enhanced breasts), it is comfortable and I do not even think about the fact that I am wearing it. But when I try to put one on as myself, my physique is such that the bra is not doing anything supportive, it’s just there. As such, I am fully aware of it the entire time I am wearing it. I have had this experience with other articles of clothing when they are not being “worn” for their intended purpose, they are just “put on” to scratch an itch.

I guess this is an analogy for my life, I “put on” a front for most of my life and now I “wear” who and what I am proudly! I’m certainly not perfect and not open to all of the world, but I am open to much of the world and am very proud of myself for doing so.

Wear it ladies!

Bonus Post: November 11, 2020 – Yeah, I am skipping ahead chronologically, but this outing isn’t worth a full post. On this day, I had an electrolysis appointment where only one other human being would see me. So no need to do much outfit-wise. On the way there, I stopped at yet another antique mall which I spied along the way. No real story. I went very simple and casual this day.

Not my greatest pictures, but I did get out this day.

Antiquing

October 30, 2020 – A few days back, my wife and I were doing some shopping for a remodeling project, on the other side of town. There I saw an antique mall!! That is what I call an outing destination, a frequent outing destination. So two days later, I made the drive again. Day two of a planned three day Kandi run.

This will not be a long story. The morning was busy, working out, grocery shopping for both us and my parents, a few other errands. Plus the dog was my constant companion (good because I love him and also a pain in the behind because I love our empty nest). I then got dressed knowing I would be masked the entire time out and that my outfit left very little skin exposed. That means quicker prep time.

I picked up this sweater recently at Piece Unique from the 90% off rack, so it was basically disposable. The rest of the outfit just fell together. As I have recently stated, I know the longer wig looks better, but this one is uber comfortable when out. The long wig is an enormous hassle, I am never really comfortable it it or any longer wig. I’ll live with my poor hair choices for a while anyway.

At the antique mall, I had a ball! There was so much to see and I just love browsing like that. My eyes light up at music related items, I get reminiscent seeing things from my youth. A pay phone! A rotary phone! A concert poster with tickets running $6! I could go on and on……

I finalized my Christmas shopping for one of the three people I give gifts to. I scored a few great beer glasses for myself and a wonderful old Brownie camera, circa before I was born, as I love tchotchkes like this.

But the best part was I got two framed Beatles photographs from their visit to Cleveland in 1966. One in a limo and one at their press conference. I also picked up a Beatles logo wall plaque. Score!!

This is all I ask for, a place to walk about, look at interesting things and maybe have a human interaction once in a while. I’m not asking too much, am I?

Two and a half hours door to door (the dog was happy about that), a great outing on a crappy weather day.

Supper Club tonight!!!!!!

Rainy Days and Thursdays……

Okay, I coopted a Mama’s and Papa’s song title here, but I have to do this hundreds and hundreds of times, so cut me some slack! 🤷‍♀️

October 29, 2020 – So this week I am hoping for a three day Kandi run. We are dog sitting for a week, which puts a bit of a crimp on my activities. I booked (you have to do that now) a visit to the Akron Art Museum on a very rainy day. I am in a complete masked situation and can’t stay out as long as I’d like, so I went with what I thought was the right outfit.

My outfit this day is a bit of my Joanna Cash (pardon the bad play on words) homage. I recently picked up the cowl neck sweater for a buck, it has some flaws, but with the jacket, I liked it. And it’s an XS!! The jacket, a fav! Black jeans and cute sneaks and out the door this girl goes!

My visit was uneventful but much better than I had anticipated. It certainly is not as large as The Cleveland Museum of Art, but I very much enjoyed it. And I am not really an art person. Here are a few photos of my visit.

Not yet wanting to head home, I made my way to the nearby mall, one I frequent often. All I had planned on doing was walk the mall for a half hour and head home to see the dog. But as I walked into the door of Dillard’s of all places, I saw a vinyl record display. Bingo! I picked up a new copy of Abbey Road, one of the Christmas gifts on my list. I was so happy!!!!

So before I left, me and the dog did a little photo shoot. He is the cute one……

A nice day, a good outfit, getting out in public, seeing a place I had never seen before, Abbey Road and me and my friend having some fun. Lucky me!!

Trying To Recreate Normalcy

I have reached out to Kandi’s pastor (different than mine, which is why I referred to him this way) and another local pastor whom I have a friendship with. Both churches are only live streaming. All I wanted to do is walk into the back of a church during the live stream, sit quietly, properly masked and observe. Then silently slip out the back door. But while both were kind beyond words, they didn’t really want to open up that can of worms, maybe having others want to do the same. So I turned to my actual church (not Kandi’s), the Catholic church, which seems to be the only one up and running, to feed my needs. Something to do dressed nicely, out in public, a Sunday morning activity and of course, giving me a place to worship.

October 25, 2020 – Allow me first to address two parts of my presentation this day. First of all, you can see I went back to my pre-COVID wig. This was done for a few reasons. While I will acknowledge I do, in fact, look better with long and lighter hair, maintaining long hair (a wig) remains difficult. Cold weather means static electricity. Wearing a jacket, in this case a wool jacket, creates a great deal of tangles. Tangles need to be combed out. Combing out a long wig pulls out hair and over time the wig gets beat up and thinned out. Since I am not made of money, I will wear the older wigs on short outings (like this one) and the longer ones when I am at an event or a Supper Club. I will also say, frankly, I am much more comfortable in this wig than the “better” looking ones and it’s not even close.

Also, I had a pesky cut on my chin from shaving. So with a little eyeliner, that obvious cut became a cute little mole. Improvise, ladies!

So let’s talk about my church outfit. Perfect for the occasion and circumstances. The center point of the outfit is this lovely Isaac Mizrahi wrap skirt. I love the grey turtleneck with it, triple draping necklaces, dark hose and my cute little bow shoes. I just picked up the earrings at Dillard’s as discussed in a recent post. Another day being out and never once thinking about the fact that I am dressed as I am (outside of the fact that I looked good). It was just a day, as it should be.

So here we are heading out the door, the first time I have been able to wear this overcoat I picked up at the end of last winter for almost nothing at a thrift.

This day was a short one, but a nice one. My first stop was a diner in an arcade downtown. A relatively small diner, but pretty crowded. I enjoyed my meal. But as always, no one paid me any particular attention. I do love breakfast and for me, there is little better than scrambled eggs, home fries and coffee. Oh yeah, and waitresses called me “honey” and “sweetie”, while that may be what they call everyone, I still enjoyed it!

After my meal, I masked up (I wore a disposable mask into the diner, but held it over my face to preserve my makeup since my face would be seen while eating). Once the mask went on for church, that was it for the day, it would be on until I got home.

Mass was nice, everyone all spread out, so human interaction was lacking, but I just want to be human, be part of a group of other humans, doing so safely. I NEED any human connection.

That was my morning, about three hours of time well spent. Yeah, it was a small percentage of what I used to be able to do, but it was a small slice of normalcy. I will continue to seek small slices of normalcy. I need small slices of normalcy.

A lovely morning, me being me, me looking nice, me seeing others, me being happy. Since I lost that weekly shift at the art museum, this will be my go to outing to ensure I get out in public at least once weekly. Not too bad for an old broad!

See the updated Supper Club page!

Lunch with Karla and Farewell to Hannah

By Dee

In mid-September I had the combination of free time and the urge to get out, so I ventured out three times in five days.

Wednesday morning I headed to Nordstrom, where my friend Karla was working. I was wearing a blue floral summer dress I bought earlier this summer at Nordstrom, along with the Columbia blue cardigan I bought in February in Australia. Karla and I chatted for a while at the store and then went to lunch at the Cheesecake Factory (when I’m dressed, I am always happy to go to the Cheesecake Factory, because I have always been treated kindly–although their meals are not kind to my waistline). It was fun catching up.

The following Saturday I had the afternoon free and was deciding where to go, but I knew all along where I should go. On Wednesday Karla had told me that Hannah, a SA I had met previously, had given her two weeks notice and her last day was that Saturday. I wore another summer dress I bought at Nordstrom, and the other cardigan I bought in Australia. I had another SA chase down Hannah and she filled me in on her plans; going back to school and getting an MBA, perhaps at the University of Colorado at Boulder. We talked for about a half hour, and I wished her well in her future endeavors, and she happily posed for the selfie (Karla on the left, Hannah in the center).

That night we had a dinner meeting for the St. Louis Gender Foundation. The meeting was actually a two-parter; dinner at a local restaurant, and the meeting at a nearby LGBT support group location. Given the current circumstances, I chose not to attend the dinner but I did attend the meeting. I wore my new jumpsuit to the meeting, having brought it to Nordstrom and changing in the change rooms there. After the meeting, I didn’t want the night to end, so I visited a local casino for about an hour, playing a video blackjack machine and losing a few dollars (I am not a big gambler, but casinos are a good venue to go to dressed).

On Sunday I had a late afternoon tennis match in west St. Louis County, so I decided to visit an outdoor outlet mall beforehand (and then clean up and change into my tennis clothes for the match). I noticed on Saturday that Hannah was wearing a black dress with boots and black pantyhose (she said she likes wearing pantyhose!), so in a homage to her I wore my Princess Highway black dress, black pantyhose, and my black boots.

Unfortunately, it was too warm for pantyhose, so I had to take them off after about a half-hour (while I was trying on some clothes in a change room). Then I figured out that wearing the boots without the pantyhose was going to kill my feet with blisters, so I had to abort my girl time earlier than planned–but not before a SA at the Calvin Klein outlet said she liked my dress (me too; another item in my wardrobe I don’t get to wear often enough).

Lost my match, and had to buy bandaids to put on my blisters, but it was still three fun days to get out.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus (or Sisyphos) is a figure from Greek mythology who, as king of Corinth, became infamous for his general trickery and twice cheating death. He ultimately got his comeuppance when Zeus dealt him the eternal punishment of forever rolling a boulder up a hill in the depths of Hades.

This is how I feel most times in my Kandi life. Here is just another example. I have talked about how I need to get out in public to make Kandi real. COVID wiped out the extensive network of volunteer opportunities that I built up over the past five+ years. Then The Cleveland Museum of Art welcomed back volunteers to serve as wayfinders. So for the past few months, I have probably gotten there at least weekly. I get to get dressed. I get to feel a part of something special. I am greeted, I am appreciated. I was part of a “team”. I was very, very happy. A museum day was a day I looked forward to very much, despite the fact that there were few patrons and frankly, the days there were boring. Now, I am out.

No, I didn’t do anything wrong and it’s no one’s fault. Just circumstances. Effective November 1, they eliminated this “position”, replacing it with an information desk. The problem with that is the shifts are longer and only one person (f’n COVID again!) works the desk. So the need for volunteers has been cut to about 30% of what it was with the wayfinder position.

My seniority there isn’t long enough to get first dibs, so out of the kindness of the heart of my friend the Volunteer Coordinator, I will be working one single shift in November. Frankly, this depresses me greatly. I used to work huge parties and wonderful chamber music concerts. Events, happenings. People knew me, hugged me, sought me out when they got there. Now I am not really needed.

I am back to the old, what can I do?? But I am used to frequent disappointment as Kandi, so I’ll keep pushing the rock up the hill, with no end in sight……….. COVID blows for everyone, all of us in one way or another.

October 22, 2020 – My final shift as a wayfinder. I wore this recently purchased $2 skirt and free sweater (acquired in a clothing swap), feeling cute as a button. This skirt is so much better in real life than in photos, it has so many different colors that just don’t come through here.

I got out the door a bit early, so I stopped at Dillard’s where I look for bargains. Usually, there are not many, so it’s easy for me not to buy anything. But when there are, I have picked up some outstanding items. Today, they were practically giving away earrings, so I picked up a couple pair.

The interesting part of the stop was when I was checking out, the credit card reader froze up. That gave me a “moment”. The woman was so sweet, but she didn’t know what to do. She asked a manager and repeatedly referred to me as “she”, naturally and effortlessly (yeah, no one notices these things but me). Made me happy.

My day at work was a huge nonevent. I worked solo on a very dead day. So I stood there, looking like the best dressed greeter in museum history (of course, I am joking), doing almost nothing. Thankfully it was a gorgeous, sunny, unseasonably warm day.

A bittersweet day. I lobbied many of the other woman I work with to find something, anything for me to do there. I am clearly a welcome part of the fabric of the place and I do not want to lose that. I’ll keep pushing the damn rock up the hill and see what happens.

For your amusement, a few lighter photographic moments.

Looks like I just have to dig in again and continue to reinvent myself, over and over and over……

Life got into the way for Stephanie and she’ll be back soon!

A Little Q & A

A friend, whom I greatly respect, recently posed the following questions to me.

What do you believe the first impression strangers have of you?

Since I have had many, many encounters, I suspect the first impression is either a positive or at least a curious one. Given my disposition, I believe I am seen as a positive person, someone worth speaking with. In these days of COVID, while working at the art museum as a greeter, many people have the option of simply avoiding me or engaging me. Most engage me or at least greet me favorably.

I understand that every single person who sees me for the very first time is making some type of assessment. But that is true of almost everyone we meet. I can truly say that I have never had a negative experience to my face. I certainly know I have rolled a few eyeballs, I know I have been discussed between couples that have met me, but I firmly believe I have left nothing but generally positive impressions.

I can say that I have not shied away from putting myself out there. I have said here and in other places that tens of thousands of people have seen me. I will use one specific example. The Cleveland Museum of Art (pre-COVID) held a Summer Solstice party. We generally have over five thousand visitors. In 2018, I was the main greeter, directing people to the appropriate line. Just that night alone, I got 5,000 look-sees with many, many positive comments. I was a prominent participant in the monthly museum MIX parties, which regularly hosted (I miss those days…) a few thousand guests.

What do you suppose people think of you after meeting?

I am certain I have been a topic of conversation in many a person’s home!

It would be foolish of me to think I wasn’t discussed. If my wife and I met a “sister” in the wild (obviously I have an interest), we would discuss or at least mention her.

Many, many people that I have met and have been unable to remember (I meet so many, especially when we had the monthly parties at the art museum, I have difficulties remembering everyone), have come up to me and reintroduced themselves. That happened just the other day. That tells me the initial reaction was a positive one. Because I respect the privacy of others, I don’t post too many pictures of me with other people, but I have many, many photos demonstrating how I have been perceived.

PLEASE don’t mistake this for arrogance on my part. Frankly, me, no one would give a damn. Kandi, different story.

How do you explain being a bigender M2F crossdresser to a stranger?

I guess I would have to understand it myself to explain it. But one thing I always do is encourage questions. I have told many a person to ask whatever they want, telling them I cannot be offended. And I have been asked many different types of questions. One group of woman even asked me, let me phrase this delicately, if I was shaved “down there”. [This happened at a North Coast Men’s Chorus concert, so there, this type of question was not unexpected.] I’ll leave the answer to your imagination…..

My very simple explanation of why I am dressed as I am is that it makes me happy. If we don’t encourage others to try and understand us, how will we change anything?

My mission in my life now is to make a difference. Help a sister. Be a positive example. I have had a lot of great things in my life and I have a lot of struggles. What’s the point of it all if you can’t turn it all around and make a difference?

Thank you, my friend, for sparking me to think a bit.

We’ve added 2017 to the Gallery page, quite a remarkable year! Check it out!!

Rainy Day Out

October 21, 2020 – On this day, I had a list of things I wanted to do, looking forward to them. Play some pickleball in the morning, get in a short run to test the Achilles, finish an outdoor painting project. My wife was working late this evening, so I then planned to get dressed and run some errands.

Well, Mother Nature had different plans, so I had to call an audible. The day started with me dressed from the neck down in female workout attire, on the treadmill and stepper for almost an hour and a half at Planet Fitness. As far as I know, no one noticed or cared. No pictures of this, I don’t want to scare people.

My new acceptance of masks allowed me to go with a regular shave (not the close one I usually am tortured by), keeping my face in tact and cutting my prep time almost in half.

It rained for the bulk of my outing on this day. My first stop was a local Nike outlet store. I literally run through shoes so twice a year I need to restock. While looking at the clearance shoes, the young man working there said “Ma’am do you need any help?”. You know how that makes me feel! I picked up two pair of shoes in colors I could never find in my price range (shoes seem to be priced based on color, the brighter, the more expensive) for the cost of one pair on sale. Yeah me!!

Stop two, the bank to make a deposit.

Allow me to provide a little peak into my ongoing evolution as a bigendered person. I recently talked about this a bit, so forgive me for treading the same ground. For many years now, I have been a 24/7/365 panty girl. I own no male underwear. I wear them to the doctor, the gym (and the locker room), anywhere I am, all the time. Now please don’t think I parade around for all to see. At the doctor I would wear a simple pair of cotton briefs. In the locker room, always having a shirt on, you really can’t see anything, plus the rooms aren’t exactly packed. It can easily be managed and it’s no one’s business anyway. As such, I have an extensive collection.

I also have a rather large bra collection. As the weather has changed, allowing for multiple layers of clothing, I have decided to take an almost similar route and wear a bra as often as I possibly can without making it obvious. This means I have had to build two different bra collections, one for me and one for Kandi. Buying bras for Kandi is easy, for me, not so much. It’s a matter of trial and error as the bra needs to support my breast (I do have small ones) while lying flat underneath my clothing. Also, in this circumstance, I want no lift or extra padding. In the size I am seeking, that is difficult to find.

I have found going down two bra sizes with an A or B cup has worked well. But finding cups that lay flat has been a challenge. So I have recently gone on a buying binge at various Burlingtons (I simply won’t pay the retail prices for these bras) and have built a sizeable and suitable collection. I picked up a Warner, Maidenform and two Halston bras, just perfect, for probably 10% of retail.

So for stop three on this day, I had to return the bras that didn’t fit right or lay flat enough. I had three different returns and the cashier was wonderful as we went through all of it. I generally don’t go into what I wear underneath here on the blog, but for girls out there wondering how others scratch their itch, I think it’s important to share.

The next stop was the central point around which I built my day, a fabulous farmer’s market. I picked up two loaves of crack, I mean sourdough and pretzel bread as well as a few other things. My plan was to craft a meal for tomorrow around the breads and I decided on a gourmet grilled cheese meal.

The next stop was a vinyl record store, researching some ideas for a Christmas gift idea I have for our daughter.

I then stopped at another Burlington, found nothing and then filled up the tank at the gas station. My final stop was to pick up the elements for my meal plan. I knew what cheeses I already had at home, so I supplemented it with a few more different cheeses and some tomato soup. This should be a great meal, grilled cheese on pretzel bread with tomato slices, tomato soup and watermelon. Boy, I would make someone a great wife!! [The meal was awesome! I used a garlic olive oil on the bread instead of butter and got a great crust with fabulous grill marks.]

A brief comment on my outfit. Again, I went everyday woman. This recently purchased black thermal (worn now as both of me, particularly when running in cold weather, if I can ever run again), a great pair of Piece Unique 90% off black jeans (maybe $2.50), boots, a triple draping necklace, a lovely matching mask and my chartreuse vest and matching headband. I felt very “put together”.

So, the morale of the story. I went in and out of nine different places and no one attacked me, no one treated me anything but respectfully, no one batted an eye. This is real life. This is our world. Screwed up in many ways, wonderous in many others. I am always thrilled at the either nonreaction of others or the many positive interactions I receive.

Get out here ladies!!

“Good Morning, Ms. Robbins”

Not sure there could be any better way to start my day!!

October 18, 2020 – The final day of a realized five day Kandi run. Between my wife’s work schedule, the weather which allowed for a bit less yard work, and just happenstance, I was able to be myself either to get out or to take care of whatever I needed to do for the household over an extended period.

I had scheduled a shift at the art museum this morning and was thrilled to do so. The young man who checks me in and checks my temperature to allow admission, greeted me as you see above, quite enthusiastically. He couldn’t see the giant smile under my mask. It’s the little things for me that I notice, that I cherish. “She”. “Her”. “Ms. Robbins”. “Girl”. “Love”. Gold nuggets to me.

This was another mask day from leaving my garage until I parked back in the garage upon my return. So, I was able to do an electric shave, not great for Kandi without a mask, but since that wasn’t the case, great for comfort. I have finally (yeah, I’m a dumbsh!t) embraced the mask. I always wore the disposable mask. Uncomfortable. Fogged glasses. Now, especially this day, I got complements on how well my mask matched my dress.

This dress was picked up on the 90% off rack at Piece Unique. I don’t believe it cost me more than $2. It is freakin’ adorable! It is also very stiff, I am not a fan of the material. It is a Coldwater Creek dress. So at this cost, it is disposable clothing, one and done and off to consignment. But it got it’s day in the sun.

The art museum was dead as it has been on Sunday mornings (it picks up in the afternoons). So I did a lot of walking around, smiling, taking with staff and just reveling in the fact that I was as cute as I was in a very public place.

A wonderful young lady came up and remembered me. She and I had talked extensively last year at a Plexus happy hour (oh, how I miss those days). I had no idea who she was initially principally because of the mask and of course, because of my advanced age and suspect memory. This was another great moment for me.

I received complements this day on my shoes (which I do every single time I wear them), mask and overall outfit. There is a doll that works there and she is my inspiration! She always look so great. Her skirt game is fabulous! I told her I always love what she is wearing and she always prompted me to bring my “A” game. I believe I made her very happy. She was equally complementary. I just love this place!

All that said, I am very bummed. The museum is stopping the wayfinder program and starting an information desk beginning in November. The problem with that is that only one person works the desk, we had two wayfinders, so slots are limited. So I’ll still work at the museum, but not as often and that frankly sucks. Opportunities to get out in public are few and far between and now they are even fewer.

I stopped at Burlington on my way home and picked up a new bra and a piece of shapewear I love in nude (I already have it in black). I am always looking for the the right bra to wear as “me”, not that noticeable in my male clothing (not easy). I am a 24/7/365 panty girl (it’s been well over four years since I wore male underwear) and want to get near those numbers with a bra, but it’s not as easy given my dimensions and the fact that it cannot be obvious. It would please me greatly to get up every morning and put on a bra and panties and go about my day, male or female. I got one down pat, the other is a work in process. TMI, I know.

So this is me on my way to work.

Allow me to reiterate, I am so happy to be a woman and want to incorporate that into my every day life as much as is possible. Life is not as simple as this or that unfortunately.
