After successfully completing the long drive and checking into the hotel I had to make a few calls and then think about dinner.
Over the years I had been in this city on several occasions. About 5-6 year ago I had made several visits here and had brought clothes to go out during the evenings. It was in this city that I had gone to an evening Mass while wearing a white and brown shift dress and I found several LGBT friendly places where I could go and feel safe.
After my calls I changed into my plum colored dress with maroon pumps, reapplied my makeup, added a little more jewelry, changed into a different wig and decided to head to a pub that I had been to a few years ago. I recalled that that they made one of the best bar burgers that I had ever eaten.
Of course, as noted, the elevators are now attended so I expected that there would be at least one person in the elevator when it got to the 19th floor. There was no way I would be walking down that many flights wearing 3″ pumps. Upon entering the elevator the young lady looked at me and then said “I like your dress”. It was a nice affirmation to receive that compliment.
I then click clacked across the lobby and out into the parking garage to another elevator (self service this time) to get to the floor with my car. There were a few less than savory individuals in the area but I came through unscathed.
The pub I was heading to was a few miles away and when I got there it looked closed from the outside since they failed to light their outside sign but it was open. I parked in their parking lot and exited the car. It had previously snowed and the lot had been plowed but there were patches of snow and ice all over the place that made my 50 yard walk to the door in my 3″ pumps rather interesting.
There was one empty stool at the near end of the bar. I sat down and ordered a beer. Two guys next to me started to include me in the conversation. One complimented me on my hair and necklace. He was being very nice to both of us. The other guy who quipped a few times about his husband. When the complimenting guy took a smoke break the other guy told me to be careful and that our smoker friend was looking for a place to spend the night. When our smoker friend returned the other guy again mentioned his husband and I mentioned my wife and soon enough our smoker friend lost interest in us.
Another guy joined our conversation and he decided to start discussing politics. There were several TVs (televisions…I may have been the only TV) in the bar and at least one of them was showing the impeachment hearings. He opined that they had to get rid of Trump. I asked him why and he spouted some talking points about Trump needing to be impeached. I asked him whether Trump was being accused of treason, bribery or other high crimes or misdemeanors. He said he must be guilty of some thing. I asked him what crime was being charged. He had no clue. He kept spouting the usual anti-Trump blather and I repeated my questions. He got frustrated and had no clue of any basis for impeachment being charged against Trump. He conceded that the economy was doing great and that he and most of his friends were doing well. I simply asked him what Trump had done that was impeachable and when he had no answer he left.
I understand that being in an LGBT bar that most of the patrons may not be Trump fans. The other guy that I was chatting with told me that he did not vote for Trump and that he was an officer on the local Democratic Committee. He also told me that he is a small business man with his own company and that he had about 20 employees on his payroll. He confessed that as a life long Democrat and as a married gay man he felt a lot of pressure to be anti Trump but that he had to acknowledge that his business was doing much better in the past 3 years than it had been in the prior 8 and that, under Trump, everyone that he knows, that wants to work is working and that almost everyone has seen their pay increase. He quipped that as a small businessman he loved his employees and they loved him and that the hardest thing for him was finding and competing for employees. He then said that, even as an official in the Democratic Party, that based on the current contenders for the nomination that he would probably vote for Trump in 2020. He said that while he liked Mayor Pete he would have a hard time supporting him for President.
I enjoyed my burger, several beers. I treated my new friend to a beer and eventually left to head back to the hotel. Again, walking in heels on the icy parking lot, after a few beers, took some attention. Back at the hotel there was a young man operating the elevator and he commented that “You look very nice tonight”. For me this was a very good evening in all regards.

The finale next week!
