I may have commented on this blog or on a prior ‘guest blog post’ that over the past several years there were 4-5 LGBT bars and lounges that were in driving distance of my home that I would frequent from time to time, that they had all closed down. I live on the outskirts of a major metropolitan area and perhaps access to the city was too much competition for the local places. It is my theory, however, that with the general acceptance of LGBT over the past few years that the need for safe places for gay men and women is no longer pressing and that these places could no longer stay in business. They were a safe haven for us cross dressers but there were not enough of us to support a business if the rest of the LGBT population was more at ease in civilian establishments.
The city where I had to travel for business has seen better times and had lost a lot of its manufacturing base. This city was surrounded by small suburbs and then rural areas that extended for miles and miles. This small city is still home to a number of LGBT friendly bars and restaurants that do provide safety and a sense of community to its patrons.
The morning following my evening in the bar I had my business to attend to. Dressed in a suit and tie I stopped at the registration desk to ask the clerk if I could extend my checkout to 1 PM. After completing my business I returned to the hotel to change and asked the clerk I had seen earlier if I could check out now. He told me that I could not and that I needed to empty my room and return the key card since he had to arrange for the key to stay active until I was done in my room. This meant that I would have to see him again on checkout after having two prior conversations with him that morning. This presented a dilemma. Plan A was to first check out and then to change and drive home dressed. I needed a plan B.
Back in my room I dressed again in my black skirt, black shell and red turtle neck. I wore my black blazer over the turtleneck. I applied more subtle makeup. While I used my foundation I limited my application of rouge and while I typically use dark eye shadow and line above and below my eyes I used a lighter shadow and only applied a thin line above my eyes and only applied mascara to my upper lashes. While I did wear a bra I carried my forms and wig in my bag and wore my flats. I opted to avoid wearing a necklace or my earrings. Checkout was pleasant and casual notwithstanding my semi-cross dressed appearance.
Upon getting to my car the wig went on, my forms were inserted and I was off on my trip. Upon hitting the road I realized that I was almost out of gas. I stopped at the first service area I got to on the highway. Since it was early afternoon I decided I would get some food and I ate my meal in their food court. I also made a visit to the men’s room. The gas pumps were on the opposite side of the restaurant from the parking lot. After eating I got back in my car to get gas and learned that all the pumps were closed. NO GAS. I knew there was another service area down the road and eventually I got there with about 8 miles left on my almost dry tank. As I have long said “If you are not living on the edge you are taking up too much room.”
On the ride back I made two more bathroom stops and in all places I used the men’s room. I also encountered people in all places I was greeted by friendly people making friendly comments even though I was dressed as I was. Please remember that barefoot I stand at 6′ tall and crush the scale at about 255 lbs.
By the time I was getting towards my home it was early evening. I decided to pass through a town about a half hour away from my home and stop at a wine bar that I had been to several times while dressed. I figured that a glass of wine would hit the spot and I also needed to consider additional bladder relief. There was a new bartender there but I got along very well with him and with a few young ladies who were in for a little wine.
Eventually I made it home. After almost two full days out and about while dressed pretty it was hard to get ready to go to work in the morning. I like to dress at home but there is a special feeling that you get when you are out and about while dressed pretty and mixing with the civilian population.
Thanks for sharing, Pat!!
